Covid Cases On Rise In Mumbai, Pune On Alert. Infections Reported In TN, Gujarat Too

India is experiencing a Covid-19 case uptick, mirroring surges in Asia.

Coronavirus Case Today: Covid cases are once again on an uptick in the country with various states reporting infection amid a resurgence of cases in parts of Asia including Hong Kong and Singapore. 

While the overall cases are low compared to previous waves, clusters of infections have been reported from various cities including Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad with notable surges. 

Mumbai has reported 95 new Covid cases in May, a significant increase compared to Maharashtra's total 106 since January, as per Maharashtra health department. 

At least 16 patients are currently hospitalised, with most being shifted from KEM Hospital to Seven Hills Hospital to curb potential transmission, reported The Times of India. 

All patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) and respiratory infection (SARI) in the city are also being tested for COVID-19. 

The total number cases in India stood at 257, according to official figures as of May 19.

Pune On Alert 

Civic authorities in Pune are also on alert reserving 50 beds at Naidu Hospital as a precautionary measure. The city has, though, no active cases of coronavirus in public hospitals. 

An 87-year-old patient tested positive this month and has since fully recovered, said Nina Borade, health chief at Pune Municipal Corporation. 

Civic hospitals are currently not carrying out the tests, she said, adding that the city is awaiting updated central guidelines. 

New Cases In Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Kerala 

Puducherry logged 12 new cases of Covid-19 while doctors in Chennai are reporting a shift: fevers previously attributed to influenza are now increasinlgy being linked to coronavirus. 

Karnataka has confirmed 16 active cases while seven news cases were detected in Ahmedabad in Guajrat. All seven patients are in home isolation and their samples have been sent for genome sequencing. 

Kerala has registered 182 new cases so far this month, the highest in the country, according to reports. 

9-Month-Old Tests Positive In Bengaluru

A baby boy aged nine months has tested positive for Covid-19 in Bengaluru. According to Harsh Gupta, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) was conducted on the boy and the result came positive on May 22, PTI reported. "The patient is stable and currently admitted to Vani Vilas Hospital in Kalasipalya, Bengaluru,” Gupta was quoted as saying.

The report said the baby is likely from Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district. He had been taken to a private hospital initially.

Earlier, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had confirmed that Karnataka had reported 16 active Covid-19 cases.
