Bridge With 90-Degree Turn Built In Bhopal, Design Raises Eyebrows

The PWD chief engineer said the unique alignment was unavoidable due to land constraints and the presence of a metro station nearby.

Bhopal News: A newly constructed railway overbridge in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal with a sharp 90-degree turn has left locals concerned about commuter safety. Built at a cost of Rs 18 crore, the bridge spans 648 meters in length and is 8.5 meters wide.

The overbridge near Aishbagh Stadium is nearly ready for public use. It connects Mahamai Ka Bagh, Pushpa Nagar, and the station area to New Bhopal. Officials say it will benefit nearly three lakh people daily by easing traffic congestion and eliminating long waits at the Aishbagh railway crossing.

Bridge Design Draws Criticism

However, the sharp turn at the end of the bridge has triggered criticism both online and offline, with residents and commuters questioning the safety of such an angle, especially for motorists. Critics say the abrupt bend could pose a risk of accidents, particularly in poor weather or low visibility conditions.

Defending the design, VD Verma, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (Bridge Division), said the unique alignment was unavoidable due to land constraints and the presence of a metro station nearby. “There was no other option available. The purpose is to provide connectivity between two important localities,” he told PTI.

To mitigate risks, authorities have decided that only small vehicles will be permitted on the bridge. Heavy vehicles will be restricted, and the RoB will be operated in accordance with Indian Road Congress safety guidelines, including speed regulations.

The construction of the bridge began in March 2023, following growing demands from residents after the closure of the Aishbagh railway crossing. While the RoB promises to enhance urban mobility, its unusual design remains a subject of scrutiny.
