Uber Offers Metro Ticket Booking Services Via Its App, Enters Partnership With ONDC

The initiative kicked off with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) tickets and will soon be expanded to three more cities, according to Prabhjeet Singh, president of Uber India and South Asia.

Now you can use Uber to book your metro tickets in Delhi. The ride-hailing services company has launched metro ticket booking via its app through a partnership with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

The initiative kicked off with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) tickets and will soon be expanded to three more cities, according to Prabhjeet Singh, president of Uber India and South Asia, though he did not disclose which cities are next, reported The Economic Times.

This collaboration allows Uber to leverage ONDC’s growing digital public infrastructure to diversify beyond ride-hailing. Singh said, “By enabling metro tickets on the Uber network, we are fulfilling the needs many of our existing customers have already expressed,” adding that the service could also help the platform attract new users.

Plans for Logistics Services and New Mobility Features

In addition to metro ticketing, Uber plans to foray into the B2B logistics space using ONDC’s network. Businesses will soon be able to use Uber’s delivery infrastructure for on-demand logistics without the need for their own fleet. The logistics rollout will initially support food deliveries and eventually expand to cover e-commerce, grocery, pharmaceutical, and healthcare needs.

The move comes amid growing competition in India’s mobility sector. Rapido, another major player, is reportedly preparing to launch a food delivery service in Bengaluru after initiating talks with restaurant partners. Meanwhile, Uber continues to offer services across multiple formats, including four-wheeler taxis, autorickshaws, bike taxis, and buses through Uber Shuttle. It recently introduced Courier XL, enabling the delivery of large packages as part of its broader logistics strategy.

Singh highlighted the benefits of the ONDC partnership, noting, “ONDC’s protocol, which is now live, scaled, tested, and reliable, enables us as Uber to use it to go live with DMRC faster, with a far more reliable infrastructure, and make it available at scale much quicker than we could have otherwise. Because of this, we can now go online in multiple other metro systems even more rapidly.”

India Remains a Key Market for Uber

India continues to play a pivotal role in Uber’s global operations. With services active in over 125 cities and a base of 1.4 million monthly active drivers, the country stands as Uber’s third-largest market worldwide. In 2024 alone, Uber facilitated more than a billion trips across India, according to the company’s chief technology officer, Praveen Neppalli Naga.

Financially, Uber saw strong performance in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, with operating revenue in India rising by 41 per cent to Rs 3,762 crore. This growth was accompanied by a narrowing of losses, aided by improved ride-hailing operations and increased support and service activity.

The ONDC network itself has seen robust growth, particularly in the mobility and logistics sectors. In February 2025, ONDC recorded 8.1 million transactions in mobility, up 47 per cent from 5.5 million in October 2024. DMRC has already partnered with the ONDC to offer ticketing through various consumer-facing apps, including Namma Yatri and Rapido.

Vibhor Jain, ONDC’s newly appointed acting CEO and current COO, described Uber’s move as a pivotal development. “As a global platform, Uber’s initial enablement of metro ticketing and logistics unlocks new possibilities — from seamless multimodal journeys to unifying a fragmented logistics ecosystem,” Jain said. His appointment follows the resignation of former CEO T Koshy earlier in April.
