Major Tech Layoffs In 2024 For Far: Intel announced plans to lay off over 15,000 employees as part of a strategy to address the company's recent financial losses this year

Layoffs have been hitting people from all directions, especially in the tech sector. Some of the biggest firms fired thousands of employees this year, and the atrocities do not seem to stop anytime soon. From Amazon to start-ups, layoffs have impacted people in the tech sector, regardless of the size of the companies.

Here are some of the most significant layoffs of 2024 so far:

Intel

Intel announced plans to lay off over 15,000 employees as part of a strategy to address the company's recent financial losses this year. The chipmaker intends to reduce its workforce by more than 15 per cent as part of a broader $10 billion cost-cutting initiative to achieve these savings by 2025.

According to Intel's statement to The Verge, the layoffs will impact over 15,000 positions. Given the company's current workforce of over 125,000, this reduction is likely to affect up to 19,000 employees.

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Amazon Web Services eliminated several hundred roles across its sales, marketing, and technology departments this year. This move is part of a broader series of job cuts by its parent company, Amazon.com. According to the company's statement, the layoffs affect a few hundred employees in AWS's sales, marketing, and global services divisions, as well as the technology team responsible for physical stores.

Cisco

Cisco Systems plans to lay off 7 per cent of its workforce, or about 6,000 employees, in a second round of job cuts this year. The company is currently refocusing on rapidly expanding technology sectors like artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. Earlier this year, in February, Cisco implemented a significant round of layoffs, reducing its workforce by approximately 4,000 employees.

Intuit

Intuit has announced plans to cut approximately 1,800 positions as part of a strategic move to replace underperforming staff and executives with new hires focused on advancing products driven by artificial intelligence. In a message to employees, CEO Sasan Goodarzi revealed that around 10 per cent of the company's global workforce would be affected by these layoffs this year.
