Google's Future CEO Will Have An AI 'Companion': Pichai's Vision For Tech Giant's Succession

While he refrained from naming a specific successor, Pichai made a notable prediction: whoever eventually takes over his role will have “an extraordinary AI companion.”

At Bloomberg’s Tech Conference in San Francisco, Google CEO Sundar Pichai offered rare insights into the company’s leadership succession planning. While he refrained from naming a specific successor, Pichai made a notable prediction: whoever eventually takes over his role will have “an extraordinary AI companion.”

This statement arrives amid mounting public concern about the growing role of artificial intelligence in replacing human jobs. Pichai's remarks suggest a different narrative—one where AI serves not as a rival, but as a powerful tool to support and extend human capabilities. He reiterated that Google remains focused on embedding AI throughout its business, while simultaneously maintaining a strong human workforce, reported Moneycontrol.

“AI as a Companion” Driving Google’s Future Hiring Strategy

Rather than framing AI as a job eliminator, Pichai called it a “companion” that enhances productivity, especially in leadership roles. He emphasised that AI should be seen as a co-pilot, not a threat. Reflecting this philosophy, Google’s parent company Alphabet is planning to onboard more engineers through 2026, reinforcing that human intelligence remains central to innovation.

Pichai shared his own experience using AI-powered tools like Replit and Cursor to “vibe code” and create customised webpages. He highlighted how specific prompts have allowed him to bypass traditional coding hurdles, showcasing AI’s growing role in simplifying complex tasks.

Still, Pichai acknowledged AI's current limitations. While models perform well in tasks like programming, they continue to stumble over simple problems. “So are we currently on an absolute path to AGI? I don't think anyone can say for sure,” he said, referring to artificial general intelligence.

Despite Alphabet’s large-scale layoffs—12,000 job cuts in 2023 and further reductions in 2024 and 2025—Pichai’s comments reflect a pivot. The strategy now leans towards investing in talent that can harness AI for innovation rather than relying on automation alone.

He cited Google’s ongoing projects—Waymo’s autonomous vehicles, developments in quantum computing, and the rapid growth of YouTube—as areas where human expertise remains indispensable. Notably, YouTube’s presence in India has ballooned, now featuring 100 million channels and 15,000 with over one million subscribers, highlighting the need for continuous engineering support.
