Stock Market Holiday Today: BSE, NSE To Remain Shut On Account Of Ram Navami
Stock Market Holiday Today: Trading on both the NSE and the BSE will resume on Thursday, April 18
The BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed on April 17 (Wednesday) on account of Ram Navami. This closure encompasses trading in derivatives, equities, SLBs, currency derivatives, and interest rate derivatives for the entire day.
The commodity derivatives segment will also be closed during the morning session, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, the evening session will remain operational from 5:00 p.m. to 11:55 p.m. Trading on both the NSE and the BSE will resume on Thursday, April 18.
In the previous session on Tuesday, the Sensex and the Nifty concluded lower for the third consecutive day, taking cues from the global market's weakness amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The surge in US treasury bond yields, reaching a five-month high, further dampened investors' risk appetite.
In the previous session on Tuesday, the BSE Sensex dropped 456 points at 72,944, while the NSE Nifty50 settled 125 points lower at 22,148.
Despite this downturn, the broader market showed resilience, with the BSE Smallcap index registering a gain of 0.6 per cent and the Midcap index settling flat.
Sectorwise, Nifty IT and Nifty Financial Services saw the most substantial declines, with Nifty IT falling by 2.6 per cent and Nifty PSU Bank shedding 1.3 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty Pharma and Nifty FMCG emerged as the top gainers among sectoral indices, ending 0.4 per cent higher.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, commented, "The domestic market sustained its consolidation trend for the third consecutive day, amid apprehensions regarding geopolitical tensions and a drop in the probability of a rate cut in the short-term. Heightened concerns arose following stronger-than-anticipated US retail sales, amplifying the assumption that the US Federal Reserve might delay rate cuts, leading to a notable uptick in the dollar index and US bond yields."
On the currency front, on Tuesday, the rupee experienced a record low, closing at 83.53 against the dollar, down 8 paise from the previous closing of 83.45 on Monday.
