Share Market Today: Sensex Slips 200 Points; Nifty Trades Below 22,500. Metal Stocks Rise

Share Market Today: On the 30-share Sensex platform, Nestle, HUL, TCS, M&M, HCLTech, UltraCemco were among the losers. JSW Steel, PowerGrid, Tata Steel, SBI, Asian Paints, NTPC emerged gainers

Share Market Today: The two key equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, on Tuesday are trading in the red amid broad-based selling. At 10.45 am, the S&P BSE Sensex declined 216 points to 73,790. On the other hand, the NSE Nifty50 was trading at 22,466, down 36 points.

Stock update

On the 30-share Sensex platform, Nestle, HUL, TCS, M&M, HCLTech, UltraCemco were among the losers. On the flip side, JSW Steel, PowerGrid, Tata Steel, SBI, Asian Paints, NTPC emerged gainers.

In the broader market, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were also trading lower by 0.14 per cent and 0.35 per cent, respectively.

Sectoral update

Sectorwise, Nifty Metal index jumped 1.33 per cent, while Nifty FMCG and IT dropped 0.65 per cent and 0.55 per cent, respectively.

In the previous special session on Saturday, the BSE benchmark climbed 88.91 points to end at 74,006, while the NSE Nifty gained 36 points to 22,502. Markets were closed on Monday due to the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Mumbai.

Global market update

In Asian markets, Seoul, Shanghai and Hong Kong were trading lower while Tokyo quoted in the positive territory. Wall Street ended mostly higher on Monday.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 92.95 crore on Saturday, according to exchange data.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude declined 0.56 per cent to $83.24 a barrel.

Rupee gains 6 paise

Meanwhile, the rupee appreciated by 6 paise to 83.31 against the US dollar on Tuesday amid softening crude oil prices in the international market. Forex traders said, however, the local unit faced some resistance due to subdued sentiment in the domestic equity market and a stronger American currency.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened strong at 83.32 and inched up further to trade at 83.31 against the greenback, registering a gain of 6 paise from its previous closing level. On Friday, the rupee had settled 13 paise higher at 83.37 against the US dollar. The forex markets were closed on Monday on account of general elections.
