Google Layoffs: Here's What CEO Sundar Pichai Told Employees About Job Cuts
He also emphasised that Google will persist in making difficult decisions. “There’s a lot of demand to do new things and, in the past, we would have just done it reflexively by growing headcount,”
In 2024, Google implemented a series of layoffs affecting thousands of employees, mirroring the large-scale layoff of 12,000 employees witnessed in 2023. This year's layoffs have occurred incrementally and in smaller numbers. According to a report by CNBC, during an all-hands meeting, Google CEO Sundar Pichai fielded questions from concerned employees regarding these workforce reductions.
Pichai was questioned about the timeline for an “end to the uncertainty and disruption that layoffs create?”. The Google CEO indicated that most layoffs will occur in the initial half 2024. Pichai assured employees that, barring unforeseen changes, the scale of layoffs in the latter half of the year would be significantly reduced. Additionally, he emphasised the necessity for Google to be ‘very, very disciplined” in its hiring practices throughout the year.
In a conversation with Bloomberg, Pichai reaffirmed his stance on the layoffs, emphasising that the company is “taking the time to do it correctly and well.”
He also emphasised that Google will persist in making difficult decisions. “There’s a lot of demand to do new things and, in the past, we would have just done it reflexively by growing headcount,” Pichai stated. “We can’t do it now through the transition we are in,” he elaborated, as outlined in the CNBC report.
Pichai underscored that although Google is increasing its expenditures as a company, it is also tempering its expansion rate. “We see opportunities where we can re-allocate people and get things done,” he conveyed to Google employees.
Following Google's positive earnings report for the previous quarter, inquiries arose regarding the company's ongoing cost-cutting measures. Reports suggest that Google has scaled back numerous employee perks, a departure from its earlier reputation. Pichai attributed this shift to “working through a long period of transition as a company.” He emphasised Google's commitment to driving efficiencies indefinitely.
