Are Banks Open Today? Bharat Bandh On July 9 Raises Concerns Over Services

The protest, according to union representatives, is set to draw participation from both organised and unorganised sectors across India.

As multiple trade unions and farmer groups prepare for a nationwide protest on July 9, 2025, questions have emerged around the functioning of banks and other essential services. The country is bracing for a large-scale general strike—referred to as Bharat Bandh—called by a coalition of 10 central trade unions, in response to government policies they claim are detrimental to workers and the agricultural sector.

The protest, according to union representatives, is set to draw participation from both organised and unorganised sectors across India. Amarjeet Kaur of the All India Trade Union Congress said, “More than 25 crore workers are expected to take part in the strike. Farmers and rural workers will also join the protest across the country.” Harbhajan Singh Sidhu of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha further stated, “Banking, postal, coal mining, factories, state transport services will be affected due to the strike.”

The strike has been launched as a reaction to increased privatisation, changes in labour laws, and a lack of dialogue on key employment issues. Central to the protest is a 17-point charter of demands submitted to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, calling for the repeal of four labour codes, the institution of minimum wage guarantees, job protection measures, and the revival of the Indian Labour Conference, which has not convened in the past ten years.

Banking Sector Likely to Remain Operational

Despite widespread participation anticipated across industries, banking operations are expected to function normally on July 9—unless disruptions arise regionally or the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announces otherwise. As of now, July 9 is not listed as an official bank holiday under the RBI’s calendar governed by the Negotiable Instruments Act. Customers are advised to refer to state-specific banking schedules for clarity on local closures.

Banks will continue their regular working pattern, closing only on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, along with recognised regional public holidays.

State-Wise Bank Holidays in July 2025

In addition to routine weekend closures, several regional holidays are scheduled in July. On July 14, banks in Meghalaya will shut in observance of Beh Deinkhlam. Uttarakhand banks will remain closed on July 16 for Harela. Depending on state jurisdiction, other regional observances this month include Kharchi Puja, Guru Hargobind Ji’s Birthday, and the Death Anniversary of U Tirot Singh.

While the Bharat Bandh may impact services in selected areas, the broader banking network is expected to remain open for business across most parts of the country. However, it is advised to get in touch with your local bank branches for more clarity on the subject.
