The Tiguan may not seem like an off-roader but it has decent ground clearance plus electronically-controlled all-wheel drive system does make things easier.

When we think of off-road we think of big SUVs with a ladder frame chassis and loads of ground clearance. If the underpinnings are not the old-school way of doing things then it isn't a capable off-roader. Well, times have changed and monocoque platforms plus loads of electronics makes modern day SUVs way more capable than you think.
 
The Tiguan for example may not have 'low range' or stuff that hardcore off-roaders get but it is still quite capable- rather surprisingly. The Tiguan may not seem like an off-roader but it has decent ground clearance plus electronically-controlled all-wheel drive system does make things easier.

First the basics, despite road biased tyres, the Tiguan has good ground clearance and it isn't too soft which means it does not scrape or it is too big as well. The basics are kept well but the 4-Motion system is what makes it a handy tool.

Volkswagen had laid out an off-road course with various obstacles. It is all in the gadgets and that makes off-road easy. Power is sent to the wheel when needed and it works flawlessly while hill descent takes care of the more intimidating stuff like a steep climb and going downward.

The 2.0-litre engine has enough punch and the steering does not feel too heavy.

The short dimensions compared to other SUVs and the quick petrol plus the AWD system makes it more capable when off-roader- surely more than what its owners will put it through. The ground clearance is good and so is the wading depth. Yes, it does not get off-road ready tyres or has the articulation to match serious off-roaders but it can do some amount of it.
