Volkswagen Taigun vs Hyundai Creta: Know Which SUV Might Suit Your Needs Better

The Creta range starts from Rs 10.16 lakh and goes on till Rs 17.87 lakh for the top-end. The Taigun range starts from Rs 10.49 lakh and goes on till Rs 17.49 lakh.

New Delhi: The big match. The Creta is currently the segment leader with selling 12-3k units a month and also commanding a waiting list close to 9 months.

It is clear that the new Volkswagen Taigun is aimed at the same segment but is Volkswagen aiming for a different buyer than the Creta? Plus how well does the Taigun compare with it? Our answers are here.

Exteriors

Both are compact SUVs but still are pretty appealing in terms of having the right size for our roads. These two are neither too small or too big while again both look premium with aggressive design details. The Creta in its new generation avatar has been a hit while being completely different from the earlier version. There is a massive grille along with the headlamp put into parts. The design is looking bigger, more rounded, and touches into the premium end. The Taigun follows the Volkswagen design philosophy of being a bit more restrained but being developed for India means that some touches have been added in to make it more attractive. A huge chrome grille is there while, unlike the Creta, the Taigun is more square shape but the full-length rear tail-light set-up is easily the most attractive part. The Creta is slightly longer than the Taigun with a length of 4,300mm vs 4,221mm of the Taigun. In terms of width, the Creta is 1800mm while the Taigun comes in at 1,760mm.

Interiors

Inside both cabins are feature-rich plus being high on quality. There is no faulting the Creta or the Taigun. The Creta has four-spoke steering along with a 10.25-inch touchscreen plus a focus on quality.

The same can be said for the Taigun but it has a sportier focus with a three-spoke steering wheel and silver accents.

The feature list for both is quite high and similar in many cases but some differences also. The basics are well covered with a large touchscreen, digital dials, wireless charging, connected technology, sunroof, rearview camera, ventilated seats, air purifier, and more. That said Creta adds in a panoramic sunroof, electric parking brake, and powered driver's seat over the Taigun which has a standard sunroof and a manual handbrake. The Taigun edges the Creta in terms of wheelbase at 2,651mm vs 2,610mm but legroom is good in both cars while Creta is a bit wider and has more headroom.

Engines

In terms of engines, the Taigun only offers turbocharged petrol engines with either a 1.0 TSI or a 1.5 TSI. The 1.0 TSI develops 113bhp/175Nm while the 1.5 TSI makes 147bhp/250Nm. The 1.0 TSI can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The 1.5 TSI can be had with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG. The Creta range begins with a 1.5l petrol with 113bhp/144Nm which either comes with a 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic. Then there is the 1.4l turbo petrol with 138bhp/250Nm which only comes with a 7-speed DCT in the Creta. Both SUVs have paddle shifters with their turbo petrols. Do remember that Creta also has a diesel with a 1.5l unit also. Both SUVs' official mileage is around 17kmpl for their turbo petrol engines.

Prices

The Creta range starts from Rs 10.16 lakh and goes on till Rs 17.87 lakh for the top-end. The Taigun range starts from Rs 10.49 lakh and goes on till Rs 17.49 lakh. It is clear that this segment is big enough for both and we feel the Taigun is more driver-focused while the Creta will have its own loyal audience with its brand.

The Taigun has more power with its 1.5 TSI while the lower-spec variants still get turbo power. Hence as a performance-oriented package, the Taigun impresses while the Creta gets a bigger cabin along with more features plus more choice in terms of engines. In the end, it depends which suits you more, a powerful driver-focused SUV or a bigger, practical/feature-rich one.
