Porsche Expects India Sales To Be Dominated By EVs; To Launch New EV Macan In 2024

The Macan will be a fully electric car and will be followed by the launch of Porsche’s electric model of the 718.

Luxury Automaker Porsche AG expects electric vehicles to contribute to the majority of it’s sales in India in the next decade. The sports car maker said on Tuesday that it expects 80 per cent of it’s sales in the country to come from fully electrified vehicles (EV) by 2030.

Porsche AG’s executive board member for sales and marketing, Detlev vo Platen, stated that the company is planning to introduce three new EVs in India by early next year. Further, Platen said, while in conversation with PTI, that the company is looking at strengthening its brand presence in India and focusing on GenZ customers along with startup entrepreneurs and women.

The German carmaker has no plans to start assembling it’s vehicles in India in the short to medium term, it said. Platen added, “We announced that we want to be net carbon neutral by 2030. So, coming from a car manufacturer, which is more sporty-oriented, it was interesting to hear (that). By 2025, 50 per cent of our cars will be electrified, and by 2030, we expect close to 80 per cent of our cars to be fully battery electrified.”

Elaborating on adopting electric mobility in India, Platen noted, “The adoption of electric mobility in India has been encouraging, giving the company confidence to do well in the segment. We were very happy to see that the (all electric) Taycan, which was also introduced to India, became very successful...and accounts for more than 10 per cent of our deliveries in India. We also see a good acceptance of the (EV) technology...and the Indian consumers are very keen on brand strengths of luxury brands.”

Notably, Porsche reported a 64 per cent growth in car delivery in India on a year-on-year basis, with 779 cars delivered in 2022. Platen noted that the company’s upcoming launch in India is the Macan car, which is expected to be in the country in 2024. The Macan will be a fully electric car and will be followed by the launch of Porsche’s electric model of the 718. “We will have our first two-door sports car 718 fully electrified by the middle of this decade, and following the 718 is a Cayenne, which is very popular here in India, (it) will be completely a new model, which will also be electrified,” Platen added.

The board executive noted that infrastructure developments like charging systems and such will decide how quickly India adapts to EVs. Platen, however, stated that Porsche remains ‘bullish about it’s future in India’.

Talking about exploring the younger customer base in India, Platen said, “We are really looking at bringing Porsche in the context of the younger generation. Porsche already has a young customer base in India compared to the rest of the world, with an average age difference of more or less ten years..In Europe, the average age of Porsche customers is 50 years whereas in India it is 40 years.”
