Maruti has been known as the small car specialist for a reason being that it currently sells more hatchbacks than anyone else. The new Celerio joins in with the Wagon R while also competing with the Hyundai Santro and the Tata Tiago in terms of an entry-level small car. Dimensions


The Celerio is the longest at a length of 3695mm while the Tata Tiago comes in at 3765mm while the Wagon R and Santro are at 3655 and 3610mm. The Tiago is the widest though at 1677mm with the new Celerio at 1655mm. The Santro is next at 1645mm with the Wagon R at 1620mm. The Celerio and the Wagon R also have the longest wheelbase in its class at 2435mm while both the Santro and Tiago come in at 2400mm. The boxy Wagon R also has the most space inside along with the largest boot at 341litres while the Celerio comes in next at 313litres. The Santro and Tiago are smaller in comparison at 235 and 242litres.

Features

Gone are the days where cars in this price bracket would be lacking features. That said all cars here have touchscreen systems with smartphone connectivity while coming with all four power windows, dual airbags, ABS, steering controls for the top-end versions. The Celerio in its new generation gets powered ORVMs, push-button start, driver seat height adjustment plus Hill-start assist for the AMT. The Wagon R also comes with the same touchscreen as the Celerio along with steering controls, powered ORVMs, etc. The Santro matches the touchscreen size but adds in a rearview camera and rear AC vents which is useful. That said the Santro lacks any steering or height adjustment! The Tiago also adds climate control, a digital instrument cluster while also getting the rear camera and also seat height adjustment.

Engine

The new Celerio gets a 1.0l petrol which is a new engine while making 66h[ and 89Nm. The Wagon R gets 1.0l petrol but also a more powerful 1.2l petrol. The 1.2l makes 82hp/113Nm while the 1.0l makes 67bhp/90Nm. 5-speed manual and AMTs are also available with the Maruti cars. The Santro gets a 1.1l petrol with 68bhp and 99Nm with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT. The Tiago comes with a 1.2l petrol with 85bhp and 113Nm while also having either a 5-speed manual or AMT. Not surprisingly, the Celerio is the most efficient at 26.68kmpl while the Tiago is second at 23.84kmpl. Then comes the Wagon R at 21.7kmpl while the Santro is at 20kmpl.

Verdict

The Celerio has priced between Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 6.94 lakh. The Wagon R has priced between Rs 4.93 lakh to Rs 6.45 lakh. The Santro price range is Rs 4.7 lakh to Rs 6.44 lakh. The Tiago meanwhile is Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 7.04 lakh. The Celerio is easily the most efficient car and that does count while having a decent amount of features. The Wagon R has more space and is more practical while the Santro and Tiago have premium interiors with more features. The Tiago is the most expensive but also looks the biggest while that said, the Santro is the cheapest. Thus decide if you want more efficiency, space or premium features?
