Ambassador To Make A Comeback As All-New Electric Sedan, To Be Manufactured In Chennai | Details
Hindustan Motors Ltd had sold the Ambassador name to Peugeot for Rs 80 cr which included the brand and rights.
New Delhi: The Ambassador needs no introduction and these days, this icon has disappeared from our roads save some for the iconic Ambassador taxi in Kolkata-albeit in smaller numbers. However, it seems the Ambassador name would be back on our roads but as an all-new electric sedan. Hindustan Motors Ltd had sold the Ambassador name to Peugeot for Rs 80cr which included the brand and rights.
That said, now both would collaborate and bring back the car in a new avatar. The joint venture would also result in electric two-wheelers along with electric cars. The electric Ambassador could be made in Chennai where once Mitsubishi cars were made. The new Ambassador would be completely new and have a different look along with a modern interior.
It would be electric and could have a single motor/ample sized battery pack. While it is all speculation at this point regarding what the car will be like, the re-entry of this brand is very much on the cards due to the name which still is in the minds of Indians due to its timeless appeal.

At one time, the HM Ambassador had the whole Indian auto market to itself with as much as 70 per cent before you have Maruti and others coming in. Today things are different but the return of the Ambassador should be good news for many who had memories with it.
The name would also be used as a sub-brand and many cars could be launched since the name brings in familiarity hence, would be used for multiple cars. The last Ambassador was made in the Uttarpara plant in West Bengal in 2014 though it would be unlikely that the same plant would be used again.
