BYD in India sells CBU cars ranging from the eMAX MPV to the Sealion 7 SUV but while imported, their prices more than match up to their locally assembled competition. However, also in the future it will most likely remain BYD's India gameplan. With BYD being restricted in terms of access to the Indian market including with a manufacturing plant, the company will remain a niche player in the premium EV space.
However, sales have drastically improved over the years with a raft of new products not being in the mass market means you can expect more premium BYD products in the coming years. This is not the first time that BYD has faced issues in terms of expanding in India as earlier also its proposal was rejected. BYD globally has a lot of products including more mass market offerings but as of now, there won't be affordable BYDs and perhaps the Atto 3 will remain the cheapest BYD here.
This is in contrast to other EV players like Tesla which have been touted to officially announce its India entry soon. For now, BYD will operate as a rival to premium and luxury carmakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz plus Volvo and that's where it has achieved growth even though volumes are low being aimed at the premium end of the market. Unlike GWM which abandoned its India plans altogether, BYD will most likely remain in India via CBU cars.
