Indian housing project extended to S Lanka's Madakumbura and Vellaioya Estates

Colombo [Sri Lanka], June 6 (ANI): The Indian Housing Project has been extended to the Madakumbura and Vellaioya Estates in Sri Lanka, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said on Tuesday.

On Monday, a ceremony was held at Madakumbura Estate in Pundaluoya, Nuwara Eliya District, where the foundation stone for construction of 250 new houses under the Indian Housing Project was laid, Colombo Page reported.

It marks the building of another 3000 houses in phases in as many as 40 estates and around 70 locations.

The foundation stone was jointly laid by the Minister for Hill country New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development Palani Digambaram, State Minister for Education V.S. Radhakrishnan and Acting High Commissioner of Arindam Bagchi.

India has promised to help build a total of 14,000 houses in the Plantation areas including the 10,000 houses announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Around 1000 houses are nearly complete. (ANI)
