Today, August 20, marks the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. On this occasion, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the memorial site Veer Bhumi to pay homage to his late father. Despite heavy rainfall, Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Robert Vadra and his son, offered his respects. Several Congress leaders were also present during the tribute. Rajiv Gandhi took over the Congress party leadership in 1984 following the assassination of his mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became India's youngest Prime Minister in October 1984 at the age of 40, serving until December 2, 1989. On May 21, 1991, he was assassinated by a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge honored Rajiv Gandhi on social media, highlighting his transformative contributions, including lowering the voting age to 18, strengthening Panchayati Raj, advancing telecommunications and IT, and initiating various reforms. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary via social media.
