Muthalapozhi fishermen want sandbars to be removed in order to protect their safety while fishing
Fishermen in Muthalapozhi near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala are living under the constant threat of boat accidents due to the strong currents formed by Sandbars. They have appealed to the state government to take necessary steps required for them to do fishing safely. "Even now, if we look behind me, you can see very clearly. We organised several protests and discussions demanding dredging. But instead of doing that, they got a JCB machine that collects the sand and stores it there itself, like a mountain. So the government is adamant to disallow fish breeding this way." says President, Thangavala Association. According to the fishermen, the currents which emanate from the sandbars make it difficult for boats to dock and leave, making the area accident-prone.
