Mamata Banerjee Claims To Assure Support for Stranded Indians Amid Bangladesh Violence

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee commented on the current surge of violence in neighboring Bangladesh. Addressing the unity among people here, she stated on July 21 that efforts would be made to fully evacuate stranded people from the neighboring country. West Bengal shares a border with Bangladesh, where violent protests led by students against reservations in civil services are currently underway. Mamata Banerjee said, "If any members or relatives of your family are in Bangladesh for work or studies, do not worry. We are prepared to bring them back. I cannot comment on the issue in Bangladesh because it is a separate country. Whatever needs to be said will be addressed by the Indian government. These are matters that the Indian government handles. However, if helpless people knock on Bengal's doors, we will provide them shelter because there is permission under a United Nations proposal to assist people stranded in neighboring regions." She further stated, "I urge everyone not to comment on or get involved in provocation regarding the Bangladesh issue. We feel compassion and empathy for those whose blood has been spilled." Mamata Banerjee also assured full support to residents of her state whose relatives have become stranded in eastern parts of the international border due to escalating violence in Bangladesh.
