Kolkata Doctor Case: Major Disclosure in CBI Interrogation of Former RG Kar Medical College Principal
In West Bengal, students from various medical colleges across the country are staging protests in response to the rape and subsequent murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, and a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is set to hear the matter on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, according to a report by news agency ANI. The Calcutta High Court, dissatisfied with the police's actions, directed the CBI to take over the investigation. This order was passed while hearing petitions filed by the deceased's parents. Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy demanded that the CBI interrogate the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh. He also called for Ghosh's arrest to clarify his role in the case. Following this, the police summoned the TMC MP on Sunday. The protests have severely disrupted healthcare services across West Bengal. The central investigative agency has sent teams to RG Kar Hospital, the crime scene, and to the barracks of the Kolkata Police Armed Forces' fourth battalion at Salt Lake, where the main accused, Sanjay Roy, was residing. The deceased doctor's father has raised questions about West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He stated, "No one from the department or college has supported us. The entire department is involved... There were three bodies at the crematorium, but our daughter's body was cremated first... The Chief Minister talks about delivering justice, but those seeking justice are being threatened with imprisonment."
