Breaking News: Actress Payal Mukherjee Attacked in Kolkata Amidst Rising Protests Over Women's Safety
In Kolkata, protests are erupting nationwide over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The public is demanding swift justice, and questions about women's safety in West Bengal have intensified. The BJP has been actively criticizing the Mamata Banerjee government over these concerns. Amidst this turmoil, Bengali actress Payal Mukherjee was attacked by a motorcycle rider on the evening of August 23 in South Kolkata's Southern Avenue. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing Mukherjee recounting the horrific experience. In the video shared by the BJP's official X handle, Payal Mukherjee is seen crying as she describes the incident. She claims that while driving her car on Southern Avenue, a motorcycle rider demanded she open her car door. When she refused out of fear of molestation, the assailant smashed the car window. The police arrived at the scene, rescued her, and apprehended the attacker. The video also shows the broken car window. Mukherjee questioned the state's women's safety situation. Following the video's circulation, the BJP has targeted the Mamata Banerjee government, posting on social media: "Now, Bengali actress Payal Mukherjee is live during a distressing attack by a motorcycle rider on Kolkata's Southern Avenue. It’s astonishing how the state’s Home Minister Mamata Banerjee has turned Kolkata into a nightmare for women, while her advisors suggest women avoid night shifts."
