Staggering Numbers: The Widespread Blood Deficiency Crisis Affecting Women Across India | Health Live

Anemia, or iron deficiency, is a widespread issue among women in India. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it significantly affects young children, girls during menstruation, and women who are pregnant or postpartum. A recent study found that 40% of children aged 6 to 59 months and 37% of women suffer from anemia, with 30% of women aged 15 to 49 at risk. Anemia occurs when the body lacks sufficient hemoglobin, a protein essential for oxygen transport. Causes include low iron levels, excessive caffeine, smoking, and alcohol consumption.  Symptoms include fatigue, pale skin, dizziness, and cold extremities. To prevent anemia, increase iron intake with foods like spinach, apples, and chicken, consume vitamin A and C-rich foods, take folic acid supplements, and engage in regular exercise.
