'Indians Really Lack Travel Etiquette': Bengaluru Man’s Viral Rant On Reddit Sparks Heated Debate

Bengaluru man's viral Reddit post slams poor travel etiquette on Indian flights, citing toddler chaos, mid-air movement, and mess.

A Bengaluru man’s candid account of a recent flight from Bengaluru to Kolkata has struck a chord with fellow travellers after he posted a detailed rant on Reddit, describing a chaotic two-hour journey that tested his patience and raised concerns over basic in-flight etiquette. Sharing his experience on a subreddit dedicated to Indian air travel, the man recounted how his fellow passengers — including a young family with a toddler — turned what should have been a routine domestic flight into what he called a “nonstop chaos.”

According to the post, the trouble began before takeoff, when flight attendants briefed a couple with a toddler on safety protocols — only for the instructions to be promptly ignored. “The flight attendant explained safety protocol for travelling with a toddler to the parents but they just blankly listen. The moment she left they let their toddler spread himself on both of their laps," he wrote.

As the aircraft waited on the tarmac, the situation worsened. The toddler reportedly became restless, kicking seats and stretching his legs through the armrest. Matters escalated when the child, having just been fed milk, vomited as the plane began its ascent. “Cut to flight climbing, seatbelt sign still on, kid does what I feared he'll do begins to burp. Mom gets up but disaster strikes before reaching the toilet in the rear. Kid vomits on the floor,” he described.

The post further praised the flight attendants for handling the situation with professionalism. “Kudos to the FAs for handling the mess and cleaning it up... sprayed a powder which dried up the area a bit allowing them to scoop it up into a trashbag.” Though the parents expressed regret, the man suggested the entire ordeal could have been prevented. “This entire fiasco could have been avoided if the baby had not been fed milk just minutes before take off,” he noted.

The user also highlighted the unruly behaviour of other passengers who ignored the seatbelt sign and moved around the cabin to chat or use the restroom. “All throughout the flight people just kept walking in the aisle to chat with others of their group, even while the seatbelt sign was on... The number of times the same people got up to use the restroom!” he added.

One of the users commented on the post and wrote, “The fact that people line up before the bridge is even attached to the plan is so sad. I just got off a flight yesterday and just as it touched down, the guy in the window seat tried to move past me in the aisle and when I refused to move, he touched me and made a face of disgust. I let him walk in the tiny space between me and the seat in front and he stepped on my toes, got out and just stood there. Probably a 50 something year old with ZERO common sense. A slight reason for why I left this country and don’t plan to ever come back.”

Another one wrote, “I agree about Indians lacking civic sense or basic etiquette, but toddlers should be fed during take off and landing to avoid the ear pressure pain since they can't voluntarily do the swallowing to pop open the ears.”
