Caught On Cam: Brazilian Reporter Discovers Missing Girl's Body While Filming Live

Reporter in Brazil accidentally steps on missing girl's body during live river report; moment caught on video just before divers recover her remains. Drowning ruled accidental.

A Brazilian journalist accidentally stepped on the body of a missing teenage girl while reporting live from the very river where she vanished — a chilling moment caught on video that has since gone viral.

Lenildo Frazão, a reporter with a local news outlet, had waded into the Mearim River in Bacabal, northeastern Brazil, on June 30 to demonstrate the water's depth near the site where a young girl named Raíssa had disappeared. As the camera rolled, Frazão suddenly recoiled mid-stream. The water had reached his chest when something bumped against him underwater.

Startled, he turned to his crew. "I think there's something down here at the bottom," he said nervously. Then, clearly shaken, he added, "No, I'm not going. I'm scared. It looked like an arm — could it be her? But it might be a fish, too. I don't know."

Shortly after that unsettling moment, firefighters resumed the search — this time with divers — and found the girl's body exactly where Frazão had been standing. The discovery confirmed what the reporter had feared on camera.

Raíssa, a local schoolgirl whose full name has not been released, had drowned while swimming with friends. Frazão had pointed out during his report that the river's current was strong and the depth uneven, with hidden holes along the riverbed that could trap unsuspecting swimmers.

Authorities ruled her death an accidental drowning. A post-mortem showed no signs of violence.

Her body was recovered later that same day, and she was buried in the evening. Her school, a local municipal institution, announced three days of mourning. Neighbours and loved ones gathered for a candlelight vigil, praying and leaving tributes in her memory.

Frazão has not publicly commented on the incident since the video was released. His news organisation stated that he was reporting from the river under official protocols and with support from local authorities.
