Here's How Apple Watch Saved Lives Of A Cardiologist & Her Unborn Baby

The cardiologist named Rachel Manalo attributes her smartwatch’s timely alert to playing a critical role in safeguarding both her and her baby’s lives.

Apple Watch is informally also addressed as a 'lifesaver' by some people for the experiences that they have had. Over the years, numerous stories about the device alerting users to life-threatening heart conditions and falls have surfaced online. Recently, another such case came to light in which an Apple Watch helped in the rescue of an eight month pregnant woman. The Apple Watch notified her of a potential health crisis just in time to seek help.

As per a report by the ABC, Apple Watch helped in saving the life of a paediatric cardiologist, Rachel Manalo, and her unborn child.

What Went Down

At 33 weeks pregnant, Manalo used her Apple Watch's EKG feature to track her heart after noticing frequent episodes of rapid heartbeat. She had been feeling dizzy, short of breath, and unusually fatigued for several weeks, initially attributing these symptoms to her pregnancy.

As a cardiologist, Manalo recognised that her symptoms were abnormal, but it was only when her heart rate surged to 150 beats per minute—well above the typical 60-100 range—that she became concerned. The EKG reading on her Apple Watch showed an "inconclusive" result, prompting her to seek urgent medical care.

At UCLA, doctors diagnosed her with ventricular tachycardia, a condition where the heart’s lower chambers struggle to pump blood effectively. The additional strain on her heart, due to the demands of both her and her baby, posed a serious risk of a heart attack if not addressed.

Tina Nguyen, a specialist in maternal and fetal medicine, commended the Apple Watch for its early detection of the issue. She noted, "This kind of heart problem during pregnancy can be life-threatening." Nguyen stressed that while devices like smartwatches can offer valuable information, it is crucial for patients to consult with a doctor to properly interpret the data.

Following her evaluation, Manalo had an emergency C-section at 34 weeks. Despite the unexpected circumstances, the procedure proceeded without complications. Her daughter, Samantha, was born at four pounds, five ounces, and is now a healthy and happy two-year-old.

Manalo’s heart condition was managed with medication and a minor surgical procedure after the birth. Reflecting on the experience, she attributes her smartwatch’s timely alert to playing a critical role in safeguarding both her and her baby’s lives.
