After iPhone Models, Apple To Start Assembling AirPods In India At Foxconn's Hyderabad Plant

After iPhone models, Apple is set to begin assembling AirPods in India. The tech giant manufactures non-Pro iPhones in the country and it is now set to assemble AirPods locally, says a report by news agency PTI. Made-in-India true wireless earbuds AirPods Pro would likely go on sale soon. The tech giant is looking to manufacture the buds at the Foxconn facility in Hyderabad by December 2024, the report added, citing sources. The Cupertino-based tech giant currently manufactures non-pro iPhone models locally along with contract partners Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron.
"Foxconn Hyderabad factory will make AirPods. The factory is expected to begin mass production by December," PTI reported quoting the source.
Foxconn, a key Apple iPhone supplier and the world's biggest contract manufacturer is set to invest $600 million in India, a recent report by news agency Reuters has said.
Foxconn will invest the amount in the Southern Indian state of Karnataka for chip equipment manufacturing and casing components for iPhones. Foxconn's investment is expected to generate roughly 12,000 jobs. Some $350 million, or roughly Rs 2,890 crore will go towards setting up the Apple iPhone component facility, while Foxconn will tie up with Applied Materials in a $250 million, or roughly Rs 2,064 crore project to make chip-making tools, the report added.
Foxconn's subsidiary, Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII), has also announced that it is mulling to invest Rs 1,600 crore to set up a campus in Tamil Nadu's Kancheepuram district, near state capital Chennai.
To recall, riding on bumper iPhone sales and the trend of premiumisation, Apple registered a record double-digit revenue in India in the June quarter. Tim Cook, Apple CEO said the company was pleased with the growth in India, the second-largest smartphone market in the world. The tech giant has recently expanded its retail presence in the country with two stores in Delhi and Mumbai and their performance has "exceeded expectations".
