Fortnite Maker Epic Games To Launch Its Own App Store For Android & iOS This Year

Epic Games will only take 12 per cent as the commission from developers as compared to Apple charging 30 per cent for the same.

After a prolonged wait, the anticipation is finally coming to an end as Epic Games Store is poised to launch on iOS and Android before the year's end. The company made this exciting announcement through a post on X, confirming the arrival of its mobile app store on Apple and Google platforms by the end of 2024. According to Pocketgamer, during the State of Unreal Event at GDC, Epic Games General Manager Steve Allison expressed that the company had been persistently fighting against the dominant gatekeepers in the mobile sector, referring to companies like Apple and Google.

Allison also disclosed that their upcoming mobile app would be a pioneering, games-centric multi-platform endeavour. Additionally, Epic Games will introduce new self-publishing tools specifically tailored for mobile to assist developers in sharing their creations on the forthcoming app.

Epic Games To Charge 12 Per Cent From Developers As Platform Commission

At the State of Unreal Event, Epic Games asserted that they would adhere to the same terms for their Game Store on PC for their mobile app as well. This implies that developers will retain 88 per cent of the revenue generated by their games, with the remaining 12 per cent going to Epic. These profit-sharing terms contrast starkly with the 30 per cent cuts imposed by the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Epic Games has not disclosed any information regarding the games that will be available at the launch of their upcoming mobile app. More updates on this topic are expected to be provided by the company in the future.

Since its inception nearly six years ago, the Epic Games Store has gained global recognition, particularly for its frequent giveaways of premium game titles. Some notable games that have been given away by the company in the past include Grand Theft Auto V, Just Cause 4, and Control.

Additionally, the Epic Games Store hosts popular eSports titles like Fortnite and Rocket League, making it a hub for widely played competitive games around the world. It's worth noting that Epic Games is also the developer behind Unreal Engine, a powerful game development platform utilised in numerous games across the industry.
