Chennai: A sub-inspector of police reportedly shot dead a history-sheeter, who was wanted in as many as 35 cases, after he allegedly assaulted them with machetes and attempted to flee Thoothukudi on Friday. This encounter being the second in a week as another chain-snatcher from Jharkhand was killed by the police earlier this week near Chennai.

Upon reaching, the police told Duraimurugan to surrender but he refused to oblige the orders and reportedly attacked one of the constables with a machete. When the sub-inspector told him to surrender and fired a warning shot, he allegedly refused to surrender.

Despite being warned Duraimurugan attacked the sub-inspector and in self-defence the police personnel opened fired three rounds from his gun, the report said. However, Duraimurugan's two friends who were with him during the time of the incident escaped from the spot.

"A special team by sub-inspector Raja Prabhu received the information that the accused along with two others were staying near Muthiapuram. Following this, constable David Raja and the SI visited the spot. However, two accomplices escaped from the spot while David Raja started chasing the history-sheeter, following which the latter cut David Raja's left hand with a machete.

The SI immediately fired warning shots in the air and told Duraimurugan to surrender but the history-sheeter attacked Raja Prabhu and left him injured. Following this, Raja Prabhu fired three rounds at Duraimurugan in self-defence," Thoothukudi SP Jayakumar said as quoted by Times of India.
