IIT-Madras Sexual Assault Case: Man Arrested For Sexually Assaulting Woman Student On Campus
The Kottupuram police said, once IIT-M identified the accused they informed the police station and action was initiated against the accused.
Chennai: An 24-year-old man was arrested for sexually assaulting a student at IIT Madras campus last week. The arrested man was identified as Chandran Kumar, a juice shop worker on the campus.
According to a report on Indian Express, on July 24, the female student was returning from a laboratory to her hostel on a cycle on the IIT Madras campus at night. While she was near NAC complex, an unidentified man suddenly pounced on her. The woman fell to the ground but she fought the man, ran on her foot and escaped from the place. However, she sustained injuries.
In a statement, IIT-Madras earlier said that they received a complaint from the girl's friend two days after the incident. Following this, IIT-M said that they had started the investigation, combed CCTV footage and showed pictures of 300 people who matched the description narrated by the survivor.

The student was yet to identify the accused, IIT-M said and added that the survivor does not want to file a complaint with the police.
The institute also conducted an identification parade with 35 labourers.

The Kottupuram police said, once IIT-M identified the accused they informed the police station. Based on the tipoff, the cop said that they booked the culprit under sections of IPC and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
The accused was then arrested, remanded into custody and lodged in Puzhal Central Prison.
