Despite efforts to rescue the workers, the trench on Five Furlong Road in Velachery remained waterlogged with no viable drainage solution.

On the fateful day, workers had placed a temporary portable container near a pit dug up at the construction site. On the day of heavy rainfall due to cyclone Michaung, the container housing two workers—a mason and an engineer—accidentally toppled into the trench and caused a collapse in the adjacent area. A bus stop and a gas godown also caved in and collapsed on the container. Compounding the situation, rainwater from the locality rushed into the pit, exacerbating the rescue operation challenges with the influx of water and debris.

Meanwhile, several parts of Chennai including Perumbakkam, Vysarapadi and Madipakkam grapple as water has not receded yet after the heavy rainfall caused in the wake of cyclone Michaung. The residents also lack necessities including water, dry ration and others.
