This issue has created a flutter in Chennai since only last month a 13-year-old girl who allegedly had cold drinks from a local shop started vomiting blood and later succumbed.

Chennai: Two children from New Washermenpet who consumed soft drinks priced at Rs 10 reportedly fell ill on Tuesday. One of the two siblings soon vomited blood and both of them were rushed to Stanley Medical College Hospital.

This issue has created a flutter in Chennai since only last month a 13-year-old girl who allegedly had cold drinks from a local shop started vomiting blood and later succumbed.

According to a report on Sun News, two siblings--Bhuvaneshwaran and Lakshmi Sai--went to a nearby store in New Washermenpet and purchased bottled soft drinks for Rs 10 each. Then both of them consumed the drink upon reaching their home.

Bhuvaneshwaran started complaining of uneasiness and within few minutes Lakshmi Sai started vomiting blood. The parents soon rushed them to Stanley Government Hospital and informed the Food Safety Department.

Based on the tipoff, the officials conducted inspections in the shop and sealed it. They also seized the bottles consumed and looked for the expiry date. Even though the drinks consumed by the siblings did not reach the expiry date, some other drinks placed near the bottle were expired. Hence, the officials seized all the bottles and sent them to forensic testing at Kings Institute in Guindy.

They also conducted inspections in the manufacturing unit of the brand in Sholavaram and Krishnagiri.

Later talking to media persons, the food safety officials requested public and shop owners to not purchase soft drinks from unauthorized brands.

The official said, “I request the public to not get soft drinks from unauthorized companies and especially shops should not stock them since they are available for lesser prices. If the shops come to know about those brands, please inform us so that we can immediately take action against the brands.”

However, the incident has created a flutter since a 13-year-old girl in Chennai died after allegedly consuming cold drinks from a shop in Besant Nagar in August.

The girl Tharani consumed the cold drinks from the local shop and soon started vomiting blood. Immediately she was rushed to a nearby hospital but she became unconscious and she started turning blue. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
