Chennai's Second Airport To Come Up In Parandur
The proposed airport in Paranur is 57 kilometers away from the current Meenambakkam airport.
Chennai: The Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation VK Singh finally made it public that Parandur near Sriperumbudur has been selected as the site for the second greenfield airport in Chennai on Monday. Singh revealed the location while answering a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi NVN Somu.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu government identified four locations Cheyyur and Mamandur in Chengalpattu, Parandur in Kancheepuram and Pannur in Tiruvallur. Later, the state proposed Pannur and Paranur as feasible locations for the airport.
According to a report on The New Indian Express, VK Singh also reportedly said that Tamil Nadu shortlisted Parandur after comparing the feasibility, viability and cost of the land acquisitions.
Now, the state should also submit a proposal for 'site clearance' to the Ministry of Civil Aviation as per the provisions of Greenfield Airport Policy (2008), the Minister added.
