Chennai: 74 Students Test Positive For COVID-19 In VIT

Of the total 5,000 students in the VIT campus, the authorities have sent samples of 1,200 students for testing. 

Chennai: Around 42 students of Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai tested positive for novel coronavirus on Tuesday taking the total number of cases on the campus to 74. The campus already had 33 students positive for COVID-19 as of Monday. 

Overall, VIT has a strength of 5,000 students. Of the total, the authorities on the campus sent the samples of 1,200 students for testing, said a report on ABP Nadu. 

On Tuesday, TN Health Secretary Radhakrishnan said, the government is committed to curbing the spread of the virus. People with symptoms will first be tested and the students testing positive for the virus will be isolated. 

Last week, six students of Anna University tested positive for coronavirus. The first patient tested positive after taking part in a cultural event. Following that, 40 other students from the architecture wing were tested for the virus.

In April, IIT Madras campus reported 230 COVID-19 cases. Another Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute reported 75 coronavirus cases last month.

However, the officials brought the clusters in Anna University, IIT Madras, Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute under control.

As of Monday, Tamil Nadu reported 89 new coronavirus cases taking the total number of active cases in the state to 493. 

The highest number of COVID-19 cases was reported in Chengalpet with 46 people testing positive for the virus followed by Chennai with 33 cases and Coimbatore with 2 cases.

On Monday, the health department also tested 12,824 persons for COVID-19
