Fire Breaks Out At Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital In Tamil Nadu

TN Health Minister Ma Subramaniam and Health Secretary are also present at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Chennai: A fire broke out at the surgical ward of the second block at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Royapettah, Chennai at 11 am on Wednesday. Based on the information, the fire and rescue department immediately rushed four fire tenders into service. 

Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Radhakrishnan was also present at the site. Talking to Puthiyathalaimurai, TN Health Secretary Radhakrishnan said, "The fire is being controlled by the fire tenders. The firefighters have said that all the patients have been rescued. The Health Minister and dean are also present with us. The main tower block 1,2,3 is not affected due to the fire."

"The fire broke out in one of the older buildings, the new three blocks are safe from fire. So far no report of casualties or injuries have been reported," he said.

According to hospital officials, 33 patients were shifted from the fire-affected wards.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian told reporters: "The patients have been shifted to other wards safely. No one has been injured. The fire seems to be due to electricity leakage."

There were 10 oxygen cylinders in the room where the fire mishap was reported and the firefighters safely removed the cylinders from the spot, he said.

The police are investigating to find the exact cause of the fire.
