Husband Pronounces 'Triple Talaq' Over WhatsApp Call After UP Woman Gives Kidney To Her Brother For Free

A woman in Uttar Pradesh was given triple talaq after she refused to demand payment from her brother for donating a kidney to save his life.

A 42-year-old woman identified as Tarannum, who donated her kidney to save her brother's life, was divorced by her husband through a WhatsApp call by pronouncing 'talaq' thrice, police said. The husband, identified as Mohammad Raseed, allegedly demanded Rs 40 lakh from her brother for the kidney donation, leading to the divorce when she refused, news agency PTI reported. The incident unfolded four months ago, and a case has now been registered against Raseed at the Dhanepur police station in Uttar Pradesh.

According to PTI, Circle Officer (Sadar) Shilpa Verma informed that Tarannum and Raseed got married 25 years ago, but Raseed opted for a second marriage after Tarannum couldn't conceive within five years of their union. Following this, Raseed went to Saudi Arabia for work.

As per Tarannum's complaint, her brother, Mohammad Shakir, residing in Mumbai and working as a tailor, faced a severe kidney ailment. Doctors at Mumbai's Jaslok Hospital recommended a kidney transplant to save his life. Tarannum donated one of her kidneys to her ailing brother after speaking to her husband about it.

The situation took a turn for the worse when Raseed, later speaking to Tarannum over the phone, allegedly insisted that she demand Rs 40 lakh from her brother as compensation for the kidney donation. Tarannum refused, prompting her husband to pronounce 'talaq' thrice over a WhatsApp call, ending their marriage, PTI reported.

Tarannum informed her in-laws about the same and was reportedly asked to leave the house. Since then, she has been residing at her parent's place.

According to PTI, Circle Officer Verma revealed that a case has been registered against Raseed under sections 498A (cruelty towards a woman by her husband or relatives) of the Indian Penal Code and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act. She added that Raseed would be arrested upon his return to the country.
