UP: Minor Girl Strangled To Death By Brother In Meerut Over Interfaith Relationship
According to the police, the minor girl was in love with a man, who belonged to another faith and had also eloped with him twice earlier.
Uttar Pradesh: A 16-year-old girl was strangled to death in public view by her own brother, who disapproved of her relationship with a man from another community in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident took place in the Nagla Shekhu village, following which the police arrested the accused, who has been identified as 20-year-old electrician, Haseen, The Indian Express reported.
According to the police, the minor girl was in love with a man, who belonged to another faith. She had also eloped with him twice earlier.
Kamlesh Bahadur, Superintendent of Police (Meerut rural) said, "She had recently eloped with the man and we brought back both of them. She was handed over to her family because of being a minor while the accused was also freed as her family members refused to lodge the complaint, fearing social stigma."
As per the report, the girl was planning to elope with her lover again, but her brother got to know about her plan. Initially, he tried to reason out with her at their home, but she insisted on marrying the man, the police said.
When she ran out of her house, her brother chased her and beat her on the road. Later, he strangled her at the spot, the police stated.
In another incident of suspected honour killing, a was killed and her body burned by her family members for marrying against their wishes in Rajasthan's Jhalawar.
She was abducted by her family members in front of her husband, but was killed by the time he reached police station and filed a complaint. The family was reportedly unhappy of her marriage with a man from a different cmmunity.
After recovering the burnt body from the pyre, police initiated a probe into the case of honour killing.
