'His Face Was Half Eaten By Animal': UP Family Alleges Hospital Negligence Killed Newborn, DM Orders Probe

The newborn was moved to another ward by the hospital staff on duty, saying that the baby should be kept on oxygen support and the family members were asked to move out.

New Delhi: A family of a newborn, who died at a government hospital, alleged on Sunday, that the baby's face was partially eaten by an animal, in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. An inquiry committee was constituted by the District Magistrate to probe into the matter and the police have sent the body for postmortem examination, PTI reported. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Rashmi Verma also constituted a two-member investigation team at her level and called for an immediate report. The CMO is also included in the committee.

The police informed that Saira Bano was admitted to the community health centre Mujehna by her husband Siraj Ahmed on Saturday at around 10 pm after she experienced labor pain. They are residents of a village panchayat Bachhaipur which comes under the Dhanepur police station area of the district. On Sunday, Saira Bano gave birth to a boy, whose breathing was very weak. 

The newborn was moved to another ward by the hospital staff on duty, saying that the baby should be kept on oxygen support and the family members were asked to move out. On the following morning, the family was informed that the baby had died, when they saw the baby's body his face was half eaten.

"When we saw the body of the child some animal ate a part of his face," the police complaint read, as reported by PTI.

Station House Officer (SHO) Sanjay Gupta said the woman's brother Haroon has demanded action accusing the hospital staff on night duty of negligence. Legal action is being taken in the matter.

District Magistrate Ujjwal Kumar formed a two-member committee to investigate the matter. 

The district magistrate said, "This is a very serious incident and strict action will be taken against the guilty after getting the matter investigated".

The opposition Samajwadi Party has hit out at the state government over the incident.

"This is the shameful and horrific condition of government hospitals under Yogi rule. What do people do and where do they go?" tweeted the official handle of the party in Hindi.
