Final Candidates' Lists For MP, C'garh To Hearing Of 'Cash For Query' Complaint Against Mahua Moitra: The Week Ahead

BJP and Congress will be releasing their final lists of candidates for MP and Chhattisgarh polls in the week ahead. The Lok Sabha ethics panel will hear the 'cash for query' case against Mahua Moitra.

Political parties have started announcing names of candidates for elections in five states. With the Mizoram deadline passed, and final dates for nomination filing approaching for the rest of the four states, parties are assessing their best bet on each and every seat. On the other hand, Dussehra may not be as smooth for Maharashtra as the government has hoped as another hunger strike over Maratha quota this week is likely to create trouble.

Stay with ABP Live as we try to cut the clutter around the latest news from the political arena and help you understand what is likely to happen in The Week Ahead. Here are the biggest political developments expected to play out this week.

India Braces For Rare ‘Twin Storms’ As Cyclones Tej, Hamoon Approach

In a rare phenomenon, first after 2018, India is likely to witness cyclonic storms on both sides of its coastal regions – in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.  Cyclone Tej is gathering strength in the Arabian Sea and intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Sunday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is on a trajectory toward the coasts of Yemen and Oman.

Following this, it is projected to undergo a reorientation and shift its course north-northeastwards over the following three days, directing it towards the coasts of Bangladesh and adjacent West Bengal, according to the meteorological authority.

On the other hand, private weather agency Skymet said that a low-pressure area has formed over the south-central and adjoining southeast region of the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify further and move towards the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.  It may also become a deep depression on October 23. If formed, the Cyclone will be named ‘Hamoon’.

Announcement Of More Names This Week As Nomination Deadline Nears For MP, Chhattisgarh

In Rajasthan, both parties have so far released two lists with BJP declaring 124 names out of 200 while Congress finalised 76 candidates.

The final to submit nominations for Madhya Pradesh elections and the second and last phase of Chhattisgarh polls is October 30. With just a week remaining, the full list of candidates from both parties for the two states will be declared in the coming days.

Maratha Quota Stir: Activist Manoj Jarange To Launch Indefinite Hunger Strike If...

As Dussehra approaches, Maharashtra is bracing for another round of agitation over the Maratha quota row. Activist Manoj Jarange warned on Sunday that if the Maharashtra government does not award quotas to the Maratha community by Tuesday (Oct 24), he will fast until death, news agency PTI reported. He stated that a chain hunger strike will begin on October 25 and will progress to a full-fledged hunger strike on October 28.

Jarange went on hunger strike in September of this year and later withdrew his objection, giving the administration a 40-day deadline until October 24 to award quotas.

Maharashtra Speaker To Hear Sena Disqualification Pleas

A year on since the dramatic Shiv Sena split and the disqualification plea against CM Eknath Shinde and other MLAs still awaits hearing. Now, Maharashtra assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar has decided to club the cross-petitions filed by the rival Shiv Sena factions seeking disqualification of each other's MLAs and hear them together, reported PTI citing an opposition legislator.

The speaker gave time till October 25 to the ruling Shiv Sena and the rival faction led by former CM Uddhav Thackeray to submit their written replies to the petitions submitted by them to the speaker's office. The next hearing will take place on October 26, he said.

Ethics Panel To Hear BJP MP’s Complaint Against Mahua Moitra

The Lok Sabha ethics committee will hear the 'cash for query' complaint of BJP MP Nishikant Dubey against TMC's Mahua Moitra on October 26. Headed by BJP MP Vinod Sonkar, the panel has asked Dubey to present evidence in front of the committee regarding his accusations against Moitra.

In his complaint, Dubey accused Mahua Moitra of accepting "cash and gifts" in exchange for asking questions in parliament from industrialist Darshan Hiranandani. The twist came when Hiranandani, in a signed affidavit, said he used the TMC MP's parliament login to ask questions targetting the Adani group and that Mahua asked for various luxuries in return for the same.
