Puducherry Guv Tamilisai Urges Centre To Allot 10% Medical Seats To Govt School Students
The Lt Governor Tamilisai expressed confidence that the approval would be provided immediately.
Puducherry Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said that she forwarded the file related to Chief Minister N Rangasamy's proposal to provide 10 per cent reservation in medical admission for students studying in government schools in the union territory to the Centre. She also recalled how the Ministry did not approve the proposal during the rule of the previous Congress government due to 'certain reasons'.
In a release, Tamilisai as per PTI said, the territorial administration has sought that the Union Home Ministry approve its plan to implement a 10% horizontal reservation in UG MBBS programmes for the current academic year.
Further, Lt Governor said that she received a proposal from the territorial government for sanction of 10 percent quota in the undergraduate medical courses for students of the government-run higher secondary schools in Puducherry.
Soundararajan recalled how the previous Congress government proposed a 10 per cent reservation for government school students but the Lt Governor did not concur with it. Later, the proposal was sent to the Home Ministry for approval but it was not approved for 'certain reasons'.
She said, "Since there is consensus now on the part of the Lt Governor and the elected government to provide ten percent quota to government school students selected through CENTAC, the file for grant of the reservation along with the resolution of the cabinet has been sent to the Union Home Ministry for its nod."
Puducherry's Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) is in charge of finalising the list of applicants for admission to various higher education courses.
Soundararajan citing the need to forward the file to the Home Ministry said that it would not be viable for the territory administration to decide the quota on its own without sending the file to the Ministry.
The Lt Governor expressed confidence that the approval would be made available quickly and stated that the admission would be decided within the allotted period by introducing the 10% quota.
