'Sorry Papa': NEET Aspirant Commits Suicide In Kota, Ninth Such Case This Year

Rajput had previously attempted the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) twice and was slated to take his third shot at the examination on May 5.

New Delhi: A tragic scene unfolded in Kota, where a 20-year-old NEET aspirant allegedly hanged himself here days before appearing for his third attempt at cracking the exam. "Sorry papa, I couldn't do it this year as well", a note found in the room said.

As per PTI, this is the ninth case of suspected suicide by a coaching student in Kota since January. "The number of student suicides in the coaching hub stood at 26 in 2023. Rajasthan native Bharat Kumar Rajput was found hanging from the ceiling fan on Tuesday morning", police said. Notably the officer further revealed a one-line suicide note was recovered from the room saying, "Sorry papa, me is saal bhi nahi kar paya"(Sorry papa, I couldn’t do it this year as well).

Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar said, "There is no one particular reason for suicide... Many times, the student is very stressed about being at par with his/her peers... Parents should not pressure their children to study beyond their capacity... Many times the student falls in love while studying and when there is a rift, he/she cannot bear it and hence commits suicide".

"The suicide ratio is the same in the entire country. But here the concentration is high because of more students going through the same thing. But it's not as if coaching centres are the only places which see all the suicides."

Rajput had previously attempted the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) twice and was slated to take his third shot at the examination on May 5, Jawahar Nagar Sub Inspector Gopal Singh said.

The student resided in a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and had been dpreparing for the medical entrance exam for the past year. Accompanied by his nephew Rohit, who was also studying for the same exam, they shared the pursuit of academic success.

The medical aspirant reportedly took his own life around 10:30 am on Tuesday, while his nephew was briefly away. Upon Rohit's return at approximately 11:15 am, he discovered the room was locked from within. Peering through a window, he saw Bharat's lifeless body hanging from the ceiling fan, secured with a bedsheet, the officer said.

Prima facie, it appears that the student may have taken the extreme step due to the stress of not performing well in his third attempt at the NEET exam. However, Singh emphasised that the exact cause of death would only be determined after a thorough investigation.

The body has been sent to the mortuary of MBS hospital for post-mortem examination, which will be conducted once his family members from their native Dholpura district arrive.

This incident follows another tragedy involving a NEET aspirant, Sumit Panchal (20) from Haryana, who allegedly took his own life by hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room on Sunday. No suicide note was found at the scene.
