WATCH: Portion Of Flyover Collapses As Girder Of Overbridge On Mumbai-Goa Highway Crumbles

A portion of a flyover in Maharashtra's Chiplun collapsed on Monday. The mishap transpired as the girder, a crucial component of an overbridge under construction, developed significant cracks.

A pillar at an under-construction site of the Mumbai-Goa four-lane highway collapsed on Monday in Chiplun. Moments after the pillar collapsed, a portion of the flyover also crumbled which damaged a crane machine that was being used at the construction site. No casualties have been reported in the matter, reported news agency PTI.

This incident occurred in Chiplun city within Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district, PTI reported local authorities as confirming. No injuries were reported in the incident primarily due to the prior cordoning off of the area.

The mishap transpired as the girder, a crucial component of an overbridge under construction, developed significant cracks while being positioned in its elevated location during the morning hours. In response, the immediate area was sealed off, and police personnel were promptly deployed to the scene.

Around 2:45 p.m., the girder gave way, plummeting approximately 30 meters to the ground, according to an official statement cited by PTI. At present, efforts to clear the debris on the affected section of the highway have not yet commenced due to ongoing traffic operations.

Further details are awaited.

Earlier in a similar incident, an under-construction flyover collapsed in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur which led to the death of one person and left six injured. Jabalpur City Superintendent of Police Ritesh Kumar said that around six to seven labourers were buried in the debris of the collapsed portion. While talking to ANI, SP Kumar said, "A flyover was being constructed near Shivaji Showk and during this, six to seven labourers were buried in the debris. Six labourers have been shifted to the hospital. We have received information about one death. Prima facie it appears to be a matter of negligence. Further investigation is underway and required action will be taken."

A substantial mound of rubble which was generated during the construction activities suddenly gave way and the unsuspecting victims found themselves buried underneath, he said, as per PTI.

Rescue efforts were launched immediately to extricate the people who were buried under the rubble. The injured were soon after taken to a nearby hospital where they underwent treatment.
