New Delhi: Seven persons died in Bihar’s Gopalganj district on Monday after consuming spurious liquor which led to chaos in the village where total prohibition is in place.

According to the information surfaced, many people including Devendra Sharma and Ramesh Mahto, residents of Basahan village of Baikunthpur police station area, had consumed alcohol together on Friday evening, after which everyone's health started deteriorating as the night progressed. By Saturday morning, four people had died and by Sunday evening, the death toll increased to seven.

Ramchandra Sharma, the father of the deceased Devendra Sharma and Pramila Devi, wife of Ramesh Mahto, said that both had come home after consuming alcohol in the night, after which they were taken to the local hospital for treatment, where they died. At the same time, Devendra Sharma's father Ramchandra Sharma has accused the local chief and the police of forcibly pressurizing him to say that he did not die due to alcohol by taking a thumb impression.

The sister of the deceased, Poonam Devi alleged that the Baikunthpur police reached the house and asked where the liquor was being sold. At the same time, there has also been a threat of sending him to jail for speaking too much.
