Wimbledon: Murray, Djokovic eliminated, Federer cruises to semis

London [UK], July 13 (ANI): In a major upset in the ongoing Wimbledon championship, defending champion Andy Murray crashed out of the men's singles event after suffering a shocking defeat against 24th seed American Sam Querrey.

Querrey, the world number 28, defeated Murray 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-1, 6-1 in the quarter-final contest that lasted for two hours and 41 minutes to make it to his first Grand Slam semi-final at 42nd attempt.

29-year-old Querrey managed to hold his nerve when he needed to most and, in the end, he simply brushed aside the clearly injured world No.1.

"I'm still in a little bit of shock myself," Querrey said after the match. "I'm just thrilled right now. I didn't start my best, I just kept with it, kept swinging away and then just kind of found my rhythm in the fourth and fifth set and then everything seemed to be falling my way then.

"This is a dream come true: to be in the semi-finals and for it to be at Wimbledon makes it a little more special," he added.

Querrey will now face Marin Cilic---who defeated Gilles Muller 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 7-5, 5-7, 6-1---in the semi-finals.

Also, three-time champion Novak Djokovic succumbed to a right-elbow injury to send Tomas Berdych through to his third Wimbledon semi-final.

Djokovic came into the match with a 25-2 head-to-head record against Berdych but retired while trailing 7-6(2), 2-0 on No.1 Court.

31-year-old Berdych had just played an impressive opening set tie-break when the second seed Serb called for an injury timeout for treatment on his elbow.

With coaches watching on concerned from the stands, the world number four lasted just two more games.

He called time after being broken for 2-0 to send Berdych through to his second straight semi-final.

Meanwhile, seven-time champion Roger Federer reached the Wimbledon semi-finals for the 12th time with a 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4) win over Milos Raonic in one hour and 58 minutes.

He will face Berdych for a place in the 11th Wimbledon final of his career. (ANI)
