Jayawardene To Malinga: How Sri Lanka's Cricket Fraternity Reacted To Economic Crisis

Sri Lankan cricketers took to social media to express their views in the wake of the worst economic crisis in the island nation's history

New Delhi: Many Sri Lankan cricketers including legends Mahela Jayewardene, Kumar Sangakkara, and Lasith Malinga have reacted to the ongoing economic crisis in the island nation. Sri Lanka is currently dealing with the worst economic crisis in its history as they are facing a severe shortage of essentials such as food, electricity, and fuel.

Amid these unprecedented times, Sri Lankan cricketers took to social media to express their views in the wake of the economic crisis.

"Sri Lankans are going through one of the toughest times imaginable. It is heartbreaking to see the despair of people and families as they struggle to make it through the day; and each day for them gets harder," Sangakkara said.

"The people are raising their voices and asking for what is needed: a solution. While some are reacting in resentment and anger to that voice, others are trying to take undue advantage of it," he added.

"I'm sad to see emergency law and curfew in Sri Lanka. The government cannot ignore the needs of the people who have every right to protest. Detaining people who do is not acceptable and I am very proud of the brave Sri Lankan lawyers who rushed to their defence," Jayawardene posted on Twitter.
