Sean Williams Withdraws Retirement Letter, To Continue Playing For Zimbabwe

Sean Williams was also not happy with the services of Zimbabwe coach Lalchand Rajput and that's why he made up his mind to quit international cricket.

New Delhi: Zimbabwe cricket team Test captain Sean Williams has withdrawn his decision to retire from international cricket. Williams had written a letter to Zimbabwe Cricket to inform his employers that he has decided to change his mind, as reported by The Sunday News.

Sean Williams had recently said he would leave international cricket after giving his services for the limited-overs series against Ireland. He has pointed out the biobubble fatigue and uncertain future behind leaving international cricket. He also said that he was not happy with the way cricket was progressing in Zimbabwe.

As per report in The Sunday News, Williams was also not happy with the services of Zimbabwe coach Lalchand Rajput and that's why he made up his mind to quit international cricket. However, now he has changed his decision. Williams still has a 10-month central contract left.

Lalchand became the coach of the Zimbabwe team in 2018 and since then Zimbabwe have played 29 ODIs, of which they have won only four. Under Lalchand's mentorship, Zimbabwe has won only two out of 10 Test matches.

Earlier, Williams had asked the national selectors to give him rest and not consider him available for the five-match T20 series against Ireland and the T20 series against Scotland.  However, the Test captain has now said that he will be available for team selection for the three-match ODI series after the T20 against Ireland.

The 34-year-old Williams made his international cricket debut in 2005.  Since then he has played 14 Tests, 136 ODIs and 47 T20 Internationals for Zimbabwe. He has scored eight centuries and 41 fifties so far in his career.  He has scored 5,937 runs in all formats so far. Williamson has also taken 125 wickets. Craig Erwin has been named captain of the team for the limited overs series on the Ireland and Scotland tours. Erwin is the fifth player to captain Zimbabwe since the start of 2020, after Chamu Chibhabha, Brendon Taylor, Alexander Raza and Sean Williams.
