FULL SCORECARD
NEW ZEALAND (2nd innings) Session 2 Earlier in the match, India batted well in the first innings to pile up a challenging score of 318 on the board. The Kiwis bowled well and applied pressure with their intelligent variations in lines and lengths but Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara batted superbly and notched up half centuries. Jadeja also played a handy knock down the order. Mitchell Santner was the standout bowler as bowled craftily and took 3 three wickets. A terrific all-round performance from India have led them to a thumping victory by a margin of 197 runs against the Kiwis. The visiting side fought bravely and acclimatized well to the conditions. Still, they failed to deny India a convincing victory as the home side was thoroughly brilliant and didn't put a wrong foot forward. New Zealand have been bowled out for 236 in 2nd innings. Indian win first Test by 197 runs. 87.3 overs: WICKET! Ashwin bags a 10-fer! It's a carom ball around off, Wagner tries to defend it off his front foot but misses and gets hit on the back pad. There is a big appeal for a leg before and the umpire raises his finger. Joy for India as the players start celebrating. How apt, Ashwin begins India's 13-match Test season with a 10-fer. Neil Wagner lbw b Ravichandran Ashwin. 83.3 overs: WICKET! Ashwin bags another 5-wicket haul! This is smart bowling, the offie bowls a seam-up delivery on middle and leg, Sodhi gets across to play this one but misses. The ball beats him and removes the leg stump. 19TH 5-WICKET HAUL FOR ASHWIN! India need one more wicket to win. Ish Sodhi b Ravichandran Ashwin 17 (38b 2x4 1x6). 79.2 overs: WICKET! New Zealand have lost their eight wicket and Ashwin strikes it with a beauty! Pitched outside leg on the rough spinning viciously as Santner is squared up again. He looks to defend but gets a thick outside edge and it flies at a comfortable height towards Rohit Sharma at gully. He doesn't make any mistake and grabs a good reflex catch. India are inching towards victory! Mitchell Santner c Sharma b Ashwin 71 (179b 7x4 2x6). We are back for the afternoon session! Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi stride out to bat. Ravichandran Ashwin to bowl. Here we go! Session 1 LUNCH: 36 overs, 112 runs, three wickets. Pretty good session for India then. It started with some positive batting by Ronchi and Santner but once the former was dismissed, the Kiwis lost quick wickets. Ronchi was batting beautifully but he was dismissed just after the drinks break. He looked all set for his maiden Test ton but Jadeja got the all important breakthrough. Watling couldn't do much as Shami got him out LBW. Craig was Shami's second victim as the pacer was bowling a beautiful spell. Mitchell Santner is batting extremely well though. The southpaw is using his aggression just at the right time with the bat as he's hammering the poor balls. He is batting on 56 but losing partners now. Only thing which didn't go India's way was Ashwin's bowling. The offie was going for runs as he couldn't control the run flow too. So New Zealand have just three wickets left and have two sessions to battle it out. Join us in a while for the second session to see how things unfold. 70 overs: New Zealand 197/7. Mitchell Santner 50 (151), Ish Sodhi1 (3). 69.1 overs: WICKET! Bowled 'em! Craig departs quickly! Bowls a fuller length ball around the off stump line, Craig tries to drive but the ball nips back in and goes through. The ball hits the middle stump and Craig's final innings of this series comes to an end as he's ruled out of the series already. Two wickets in two balls for Shami. Mark Craig b Mohammed Shami 1 (2b 0x4 0x6). New Zealand 196 for 7. 67.6 overs: WICKET! Shami strikes! Good length ball on off, angling in, Watling tries to defend but gets hit on the pads. There is a big appeal for a leg before and the umpire raises his finger. Replays confirm it was pad first and then bat. West Indies lose their sixth wicket! This is a big wicket as Watling has a good record of batting well under pressure. Bradley Watling lbw b Mohammed Shami 18 (30b 4x4 0x6). 57.4 overs: WICKET! The threatening Luke Ronchi departs and the floodgates are about to open! He played a loose shot and gifts his wicket away! A bit quicker and fullish around off, Ronchi looks to slog sweep it but gets it from the toe end of the bat beaten by the off spin and the ball lobs high into the air towards point. Ashwin circles around it and pouches it safely! The home side would be relieved and they would sense victory now as he was playing an exceptional innings. Luke Ronchi c Ashwin b Jadeja 80 (120b 9x4 1x6). 47.2 overs: Luke Ronchi reaches his 50 and it has been a gritty and courageous knock on a withering pitch. Second Test fifty for Ronchi! JUST IN: New Zealand's Mark Craig ruled out of Test series, Jeetan Patel named as replacement The players are out in the middle. LUKE RONCHI and MITCHELL SANTNER stride out. Luke Ronchi is the key for the visitors but he needs partners at the other end. Mitchell Santner will probably need to give out his best batting performance. Batsman to follow BJ Watling has batted well under pressure in his career and it's going to be another test for him in such conditions. It's overcast as of now. Let's see what do we have in store today. Hello everyone to the coverage of the final day of the first Test between India and New Zealand in Kanpur. The hosts are right on top in this game as New Zealand lost four wickets and are 341 runs away from the target. The visitors need 341 more runs with six wickets in hand and a day's play remaining. Luke Ronchi and Mitchell Santner were at the crease with 38 and 8 runs, respectively. Tom Latham (2), Martin Guptill (0), Kane Williamson (25) and Ross Taylor (17) were the batsmen to fall in the last session of the day. From the start, the Kiwis batsmen never looked in the contention as wickets continued to fall at regular interval. Kohli started the proceeding with Ashwin, who took two wickets in an over to become the second-fastest to 200 Test wickets in terms of matches (37), beating Dennis Lillee (38), Waqar Younis (38) and Dale Steyn (39). Skipper Kane Willianson was his 200th wicket in this 500th Test India are playing in their cricketing history. Earlier, inspired by brilliant batting of Murali Vijay (76) and Cheteshwar Pujara (78), India extended their overall lead to 308 runs in the first session. In the lower-middle order, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja struck half centuries to finish off the proceeding for India. India declared their second innings closed at 377 for five at tea, extending their overall lead to 433 runs. Earlier, resuming the fourth day at 159 for one, overnight batsmen Vijay and Pujara could manage to add only 26 runs to the score as Vijay was trapped lbw by spinner Mitchell Santner in the 57th over. The left-arm spinner had set Vijay up with a big turning delivery, which he followed up with a slider that surprised Vijay, hitting him on his front pad on the off-stump line. Incoming batsman Kohli, who was struggling from the beginning was also sent back to the pavilion by Mark Craig in the 68th over. Both Pujara and Kohli together put on only 29 runs for the third wicket. Three overs later, Pujara too was sent back to the pavilion when spinner Ish Sodhi pitched the ball outside the leg-stump line and made it spin across to get an outside edge off Pujara's bat. After the wicket, Rahane and Rohit played intelligently, not taking any chances against the spinners and stabilised the Indian innings. For New Zealand, Sodhi scalped two wickets while Santner and Craig took one wicket respectively.
