My Biggest Accolade For Commentary Came From MS Dhoni: Dinesh Karthik
Since Karthik is someone who has played with or against some of the current set of players, he has been able to offer insights which not many of his colleagues in the commentary box have had to offer.
India's wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik had had a career with its own share of ups and downs. While he made his international debut before the more celebrated stumper MS Dhoni, Karthik is still around and was even part of the most-recent ICC trophy that the Men in Blue competed in- the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
Even before completely retiring from professional cricket, Karthik has already taken up a few commentary stints but he has managed to balance between the two roles brilliantly. A renowned Indian sports journalist who had described Karthik as a part-time cricketer and a full-time commentator was forced to eat up his words when Karthik made his way back into the national team with great performances for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
Having said that, his stint as a commentator was also welcomed by both fans and critics. In a recent episode of the RCB podcast, DK revealed how the biggest accolade for his commentary came from someone he never expected to come from- Chennai Super Kings captain Dhoni.
"My biggest accolade came from the person that I least expected from — MS Dhoni. He called me and said: ‘I really enjoyed the commentary. Very, very good. Well done.’ I was like, Wow, thank you so much. So, that is big, you know, obviously, he watches a lot of this sport. And so and to hear him say that was really good. And I was happy that you enjoyed my commentary,” Karthik said on this podcast.
Since Karthik is someone who has trained with or competed against some of the current set of players, he has been able to share how they view the sport with greater depth and offer insights which not many of his colleagues in the commentary box have had to offer.
"I enjoyed commentary in the little stints that I did. I think I enjoyed speaking about the game, looking at it very analytically, at the same time trying to, you know, get something meaningful across to everybody who’s watching this sport. So, you know, I always tried to make sense out of a situation in my own way and tried to articulate it in the way I thought it was,” the 37-year-old added.
The Tamil Nadu cricketer is currently part of the commentary panel for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy but will be back with the RCB in IPL 2023.
