IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal Confirms Mega Auction Will Take Place For 2025 Season

Arun Dhumal confirmed that Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will witness a mega auction. Prior to the mega auction, each team will have the opportunity to retain only 3 to 4 players.

Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Dhumal has confirmed that a mega auction is scheduled to precede next year's 2025 IPL edition. The forthcoming IPL 2024 is poised to kick off from March 22, featuring an inaugural match between MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

During an interview with Sportstar, Arun Dhumal confirmed that Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will witness a mega auction. Prior to the mega auction, each team will have the opportunity to retain only 3 to 4 players. In the last IPL mega auction held in 2022, a total of 204 players were sold for a staggering Rs 551 crore.

"We will have the mega auction for sure, where you get to choose three-four players and then you have a new team. That makes it more interesting and that format will continue," Dhumal told Sportstar.

Dhumal expressed his hope that the upcoming mega auction will be as substantial and impactful as previous ones, facilitating the introduction of new talent not only from India but also from other countries. He highlighted that teams like Afghanistan have also benefited from such auctions as they could showcase their talent on a global platform.

"Hopefully, the mega auction will be as big and as good as we have had earlier given newer talents coming in not from India and other countries. Teams like Afghanistan have also benefited as they could showcase their talent," he added.

Dhumal emphasized the importance of aligning the IPL 2024 final with the upcoming T20 World Cup in June, expressing the desire for the IPL final to be scheduled for either May 25th or 26th. The T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA is set to kickstart from June 7 onwards.

"This time the challenge is that we are starting with the T20 World Cup in the first week of June, and we were planning to close the tournament by May 25 or May 26 as the team will have to travel to the US and that’s a different territory altogether," said Dhumal.

"For the first time, the tournament will be held there and it’s a new thing, so the players need to be there early to have some sort of practice games ahead of the tournament," he added.
