FIFA 'The Best': FIFA have concluded their annual ceremony of 'The Best' Football Awards, and the 2024 edition witnesses history, as a new award has been introduced for Women's football.
The award has been named after Brazil legend Marta, who has retired from professional football after 20 years of excellent service for Women's football.
The award is given to the female footballer, who scored the best goal in the concerned calendar year, and Marta herself wins the inaugural award named after her, for her stunning goal which was eventually her last-ever international goal.
"I’m very happy with this result. To compete against so many great players, we had some fantastic goals. It’s been a wonderful season, too,” said Brazil’s Marta, who won the inaugural award bearing her name for the last of her 119 international strikes: a goal against Jamaica on 1 June 2024. “But I’m even happier to receive an award that bears my name; this is undoubtedly the greatest honour," said Marta, after winning the award for her goal against Jamaica.
