A media release by the Spanish FA claims that Spain captain Olga Carmona, who led her national team to a historic triumph by netting the only goal against England in 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final on Sunday (August 20), was informed about her father's death just after the match ended. Carmona's father passed away on Friday, her family decided to inform her about the unfortunate incident only after the World Cup final. "I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique," Carmona wrote on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. "I know you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace, dad."

Spain, on Sunday, won their first-ever Women's FIFA World Cup final with a 1-0 win over mighty England in front of a jam-packed crowd of nearly 76,000 at Sydney's Stadium Australia. Spain skipper Olga Carmona was the sole goal-scorer in the gripping finale as the 23-year-old struck in the first half past England goalkeeper Mary Earps for a deserved 1-0 victory.
Since Women's FIFA World Cup tournament started in 1991, Spain are the fifth team to lift the coveted title.
